CHAPTER SEVEN
âIâM OUT in the spa,â Dan called out to Sarah as she came through the front door that evening.
And when she stepped out onto the deck he heard her faint gasp. âThat looks wonderful.â
âCome and join me.â Would she? Suddenly he was silently begging to whatever was out there that made these things happen. Please make her want to soak in the hot water. Please. âThe warmth works wonders on tense muscles.â
âIâm not tense.â Her teeth nibbled her lip.
Sure youâre not. âWe can have dinner any time. Itâs all prepared.â
âMaybe Iâll take a stroll along the beach instead. Iâve had a big day.â
Yep. I can see your tight shoulders, your tired eyes.
Just then a gust of wind blew through the trees, filling the air with the sound of rustling leaves. Thank you. Dan grinned. âThereâs rain coming.â
Her eyebrows rose in that delightful way she had. âIâll go change into my swimsuit.â
Thank goodness sheâd packed a swimsuit. Heâd have blown a gasket if sheâd told him she was coming in naked. When she wandered out five minutes later he still nearly blew one. Her simple black costume fitted superbly, outlining those full breasts to perfection, accentuating the curves of her hips. Her flat stomach sent his into spasms. He could not take his eyes off her as she climbed into the bubbling water and sat beside him.
Beside him? Being in the spa with Sarah suddenly became a really, really bad idea. His blood pressure started rising. What was wrong with him? Of course. Blame Sarah for being so delectable.
Clearing his throat, he tried to sound nonchalant. âWould you like a wine?â
She glanced at the low table beside the spa where two glasses and a bottle stood next to a plate of crackers and Brie. Again her eyebrows rose, and her mouth twitched. âA very small one.â
Stupid, stupid. Dan berated himself as he poured her drink. She must think he was seducing her. Thatâs how it looked from here. Heâd wanted everything seeming effortless so she wouldnât think anything of it when he suggested she join him. Went to show how out of practice at entertaining women heâd become. He was more like the new kid at kindergarten with all the unfamiliar toys and too frightened to touch any of them than a confident man and father of one.
Right now he should be leaping out of the spa, putting distance between them. Then sheâd think him a really hopeless case. Heâd stay put, but for the life of him he didnât know how he was going to keep his hands to himself.
Sarah slid deep into the warm water, letting the bubbles roll up her back, around her neck. Her eyes closed and she smiled. âThis has to be the best invention ever.â
He passed over her glass. âKeep an ear out for the oven timer. Iâve got some muffins baking for tomorrow.â Keep the conversation on normal, everyday things and he might survive the next half-hour without making a complete fool of himself.
